RMDRC News

Happy Holidays!!!

It’s hard to believe there is only one month left in the year 2009. November seems to have flown by with a lot of community events and holiday preparations. This year we had a 3 day Veteran’s Appreciation Day celebration, our first ever photo contest awards ceremony and our first holiday craft fair at the RMDRC.

Thanks go out to Ken Wyatt our photo contest judge and guest lecturer.  Ken conducted two photo clinics for our contest winners and gave a lecture for our museum visitors.  Here are a few photos of our winners.

The Woodland Retail Alliance (WRA) members are participating in a winter gear drive this holiday season. With many budget cuts and high unemployment, the requests for assistance are higher than ever.  Please bring your new or clean and gently used coats, hats and gloves to the museum and other drop off businesses until Dec. 20th. At the RMDRC, you will receive $1.00 off admission for each usable item you bring in up to $2.00 off each admission. These items will be sorted and distributed to local charities before Christmas.

The Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center and several other local businesses participated in the Day of Giving on November 28th. On that day, the RMDRC donated a percentage of every retail purchase to our own Woodland Park organization Charitable Treasures. It was also the kickoff day for the Woodland Park Shop Local promotion. From now until Dec. 20th, each time you make a purchase at participating WP merchants, you get to place your name in a drawing for a gift basket worth over a $1000.00. Santa will arrive at 9AM on Dec. 21st at Charitable Treasures to give the gift basket to the lucky winner.

This Dec. 5th and 6th is the WP Sounds of the Season Holiday Home Tour. The RMDRC is sponsoring the fabulous home of Julia and Patrick Pine. There are 7 awesomely decorated homes on this year’s tour. Proceeds from this event will support construction of a community fitness/running trail and other health education programs at the Pikes Peak Regional Medical Center. There is also a Holiday Market Boutique at the WP Library open during the same weekend. Tickets for the home tour are available at the RMDRC.

Various merchants throughout Woodland Park will be having monthly in store promotions during the 3rd weekend of each month.  December 18th, 19th and 20th are the dates for this month’s Woodland Weekend with Stocking Stuffer Specials at participating merchants. At the RMDRC, we have hundreds of gift items priced below $10.00 perfect for stocking stuffers.  Look for the Woodland Weekend poster in their windows to identify the locations for the best bargains in town on these special days. It is also the 3rd Friday Artwalk.

This year we are offering weekly coupon specials from Dec.1-24. To see our gift suggestion catalogue and print out your coupons click here. Come shop the largest dinosaur store in the region for truly unique gifts including real fossils, jewelry, games, books, and much more!  A family membership makes a great gift that can be enjoyed for the entire year. If you have someone who’s difficult to buy for, a gift card is the perfect solution. Save yourself time and money by letting our staff gift wrap your purchases free of charge. And this year Santa will be at the RMDRC Dec. 5th, 12th, 13th, and 19th -23rd from 11AM-3PM so bring the kids in for a visit.

The 4th annual Colorado Kids Free Day will be held at the RMDRC on Dec.29th. This annual event presents an opportunity to bring the whole family out for a day of education and entertainment with Marc Straube of “Cool Science”. Marc will have shows at 11:30 AM and 2 PM and will be here all day for hands on activities. Two kids under 12 will be admitted free with each paid adult.

They’re back for another bite!
“Walking with Dinosaurs- the Arena Spectacular”, which is based on the popular BBC Series, returns to the Colorado Springs World Arena Jan. 21-24, 2010. Once again we have been invited to have a presence at this spectacular event. We are pleased to offer our members and newsletter recipients discounted tickets to this unprecedented event. Advanced discounted tickets can be purchased online through our website with special instructions. Visit www.rmdrc.com to purchase your tickets today!

The
Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center will be closing at 3PM on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day. We will reopen Dec. 26th at 9AM as usual so bring your friends and family in for a fun day while they are visiting.  Mike and I and the staff of Triebold Paleontology and the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center thank you for your continued support and wish you and yours the very merriest holiday season ever. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

JJ Triebold

From the Education Desk

It’s December again and the flower of the month is the Poinsettia. It has a special day all its own and a very interesting history.  By an Act of Congress, December 12 was set aside as National Poinsettia Day.  This is the traditional day to give the plant to someone you love in your family so they can enjoy the beauty of the flower for the holiday season. The date marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1851, who is credited with introducing the native Mexican plant to the United States in 1825.  He was the first United States ambassador to Mexico.
The flower came in red originally, but now comes in a variety of colors like white, salmon pink and lilac.  Some even come with spots on the leaves.  There are over 100 varieties of poinsettias available.  The plant is indigenous to Mexico, and native to the Pacific coast of the United States.

In the language of the Aztecs, the plant’s name means “star flower”.  The Aztecs used the flower to produce red dye and as a medication.  In both Chile and Peru, the poinsettia became known as “Crown of the Andes”.  Starting with the 17th century, Franciscan monks in Mexico included the plants in all of their Christmas celebrations.  The poinsettia has also been cultivated in Egypt since the 1860’s and is called “the consul’s daughter”, referring to Ambassador Poinsett.  Today if you ask for a ‘Poinsettia Cocktail’ you would get a mixture of sparkling white wine, vodka and cranberry juice.

In nature, the poinsettia is a perennial flowering shrub that grows to ten feet tall.  They represent over 85% of the potted plant sales during the holiday season, and 90% of all plants are exported from the United States, with California being the top producing state.  The dollar amount of this plant sold during the holiday season is $220 million dollars!

As lovely as these flowers are they are poisonous to your pets.  You will want to put them someplace where your animal family cannot get to them.

December is also Stress-Free Family Holidays month.  Holidays are wonderful but can add stress for busy families.  If you want the holiday to be warm, colorful, fun and not stressful, then remember to schedule some activities to nourish your spirit.  Discuss with your family what makes you happy during this season and really listen to each other.  Make your plans based on this discussion.

This joyous season is a special time for enjoying your family and friends and for celebrating traditions…..both old and new.  Love is spelled ‘TIME’.  Laugh, cuddle and play with your kids.  Encourage peace and caring for others and carry it over to next year.  Let family and friends know that the gift of time and helping each is as precious as the gifts you buy.

his has been a wonderful year for us at RMDRC and we want to thank all of you who made our events so successful by joining us here at the museum.  We know 2010 will be terrific also.  If you have an idea that you feel would make a good event, please let me know at 686-1820x110 or drop me an e-mail at: geri@rmdrc.com

I’m always very interested in hearing what you have to say.  This is your museum to come and learn in, use and have fun and most of all ENJOY!  Look on our website for our special events and come join us in 2010.

I wish you all heart-warming holidays.

Regards,

Geri LeBold
